First-principle model: the follicle pool is finite and non-renewable — fixed before birth, consumed every month whether or not ovulation occurs, never replenished. As the pool depletes, negative feedback on the HPO axis weakens — so FSH tends to rise and turn erratic before estrogen visibly drops. In Perimenopause mode, the defining signal is the width of the band itself, not a low number.
